Israel Up-close
10 days, 15 stories, hundreds of photos
Website produced by Graduate Student Kianna Gardner and Professor Julia Wallace
Fifteen of the top students at the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication were selected to participate in “On Assignment in Israel,” a summer study abroad program led by Julia Wallace, the Frank Russell Chair and Professor of Practice at the School. In coordination with the Jerusalem Press Club, The 10-day program brought students to the edges of bordering nations, to communities facing constant threats of terrorism, to meetings Israeli government and Palestinian Authority officials, into Israel's media world and more.
Students became “foreign correspondents” and saw “up-close” the conflicts, successes and struggles of this historic region. They learned how to explain a very different and complex world to American audiences. They each produced a package on a topic of interest, all of which are showcased on this website.
Before joining Cronkite, Julia was a top media executive and high-ranking editor of four major newspapers. Her focus is the future of news and innovative ways of thinking about journalism. Rob McJannet directed the video work of the team. He is a Cronkite photographer, producer and instructor . He is a 10-time Emmy award winning photographer/videographer .
